Description
Avanti first put a bike on the New Zealand market in 1985. The home-grown Kiwi brand soon developed a following and by 1991 they crossed the ditch to Australia and set up a sister company. Avanti is now well regarded in both markets and widely stocked through independent bike stores and retailers. Today Avanti has over 80 different models that provide good riding opportunities in all areas of cycling including mountain, road, path & trail, BMX, kid's and women's bikes.
Avanti basically means "go ahead" in Italian, and the company has used this as something of a philosophy or mantra. Part of this desire to improve has been made possible through the use of elite athletes that form part of its product design and development panel. This specialist rider testing team in triathlon, track, road and mountain bikes give direct development input to improve the bike's speed, strength, weight and stiffness.
Fortunately Avanti has plenty of elite riders to choose from, and they constantly demand new performance standards. Many have performed well on the world stage. One such elite athlete is New Zealand triathlete champion Cameron Brown who rides with the Avanti Chrono Team. Brown won the New Zealand Ironman eight times and was runner up at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2001 and 2005. Brown originally rode an Avanti Super Sprint in the late 80s when he first got into triathlon.
He said of the brand, "it’s like coming full circle really, having started my career on an Avanti Super Sprint many years ago it feels great to be riding an Avanti again at this stage of my career. Obviously the bikes have evolved a lot and the Chrono is a real performance machine, but the business still has that friendly family feeling and it’s inspiring to see a Kiwi brand that started out 25 years ago with the production of BMXs really hitting their straps”.
Avanti also sponsors the Subway Elite Road Team, New Zealand's first full time team that will compete in international events. They also sponsor The Savings & Loans Cycling Team, the first professional South Australian cycling team. In mountain biking they sponsor Olympic athlete and Australian champion Chris Jongerwaard. In triathlon athletes include Jason Shortis, Hamish Carter and Greg Fraine.
Avanti also uses the best carbon fiber, exacting technologies and leading designers to push their bikes forward all the time. For example they were one of the first to use full alloy frames and the Chrono is a world first design with technology that creates less drag. They also utilize research conducted by the US National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Avanti is now also pushing into the growing BMX market.
