Description
Co-Motion Cycles is a small, well-regarded American frame builder offering some gorgeous paint jobs, including a pearlized red, white, and true blue American flag design that’s sure to get noticed. The company is best known for tandems and promotes the Co-Motion Classic Tandem Race in Oregon for novices through seasoned racers. They sell a wide range of tandems, including racing ones, and also triplets, quads, and quints! These larger models aren’t gimmicky bikes; they handle well, and as with all Co-Motions, each is handmade in Eugene, Oregon in a building designed for the purpose. Some tandems are equipped with PeriScope seatposts, adjustable cranks, and easy-to-swap pedals. With these, the owner can change the fit from child-size to adult-size and back in minutes. If a stoker kit is added into the mix, even a 2 ½-year-old can join in the fun.
But what if you want to ride without the kids? No problem. Leave them home, because you can convert your quint or other multi-person bike down to the number of seats you need—four, three, or a regular two-person tandem—as long as it’s custom-built with S&S couplers. Just unbolt the couplers, remove tubes and seats, and put together a smaller tandem. This pretty wild coupler technology is made of interlocking tapered teeth drawn together by a threaded lockring. Actually, Co-Motion uses these couplers more often for frames to be taken apart for airline travel. Airline-ready coupling systems can be part of any custom bike and are also designed into several stock (not custom) tandems and single bikes. The disassembled bike pieces fit into a case with clearly labeled pads. Then the case gets checked as regular luggage. In October 2001, Bicycling Magazine reported that putting back together a Co-Motion Co-Pilot bike was, “no more difficult than assembling a cabin from Lincoln Logs.” The end result is a bicycle that’s stronger than the same frame without the couplings. But more important, as Co-Motion says, “the world becomes your cycling playground.”
As might be expected from a company so in tune with bike travel, Co-Motion has a line of touring bikes they say you can rely on far from home on transcontinental trips. They also sell noteworthy road bikes, and any Co-Motion model can be custom built to a rider’s exact measurements. When Dwan Shepard and Dan Vrijmoet founded the company more than 20 years ago, they chose the name Co-Motion to represent the “unique relationship between people and their bicycles.”
